On a usual day, I document all sorts of things as I develop and secure data-driven communication systems for my clients. I have a need to scan my thoughts for later recall. Lined paper distracts from the content; when scanned, the lines can interfere with written content. A product made by a company called Whitelines (whitelines.se) produces a product that has a 5% grey background. The grey background is interrupted by areas where there is no background. This gives the illusion of a slightly grey paper with white lines. Writing on this paper is not interrupted by dark lines found on traditional lined paper. Scanning the paper results in an image where the background disappears. The writing is not interrupted by any lines. It looks as if you neatly wrote on blank paper.
About two and a half years ago, I had a dream about this concept, but whitelines.se beat me to it. They are credited with the idea and the products.
They came up with a really cool product lately called Link. Link allows capture on an iPhone or Android phone. The paper contains boxes in each corner that aid in the image capture. At the bottom of the page are three checkboxes.
- Evernote
- Dropbox
Checking these boxes creates a condition where the phone app sends the page to one or more selections. I use Dropbox. I like this concept because I can, check the Dropbox check box, capture the page, and see the PDF on my computer, where it can be added to my notes files.
I perform some mission-critical software upgrades that affect my company and my clients. As I upgrade my development systems, I can take notes of the best practices to follow. When I am done, the notes are captured and stored for our production system upgrades at a later date. This is really handy to have. During meetings, I hand my paper over to someone who can take notes as we plan to deploy a new system. These meeting notes can be captured and emailed before everyone has left the meeting. One last important example, one of my children sometimes needs help with math. Writing a math problem on this paper is a dream. The white lines keep everything organized, and the absence of dark lines makes it easier to read the math problem.
Whitelines paper is a nice concept and neat to use. There are lots of options to choose from when choosing their products.
